National Parks

Rwanda, often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is renowned for its lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and remarkable conservation efforts, particularly in protecting endangered mountain gorillas. Here are some unique wildlife experiences in Rwanda:

Volcanoes National Park

The Volcanoes National Park is the jewel in Rwanda’s wildlife crown, famed for its population of habituated mountain gorillas, made famous by Dian Fossey’s pioneering research. Gorilla trekking in the Rwandan volcanoes offers a profound and intimate encounter with these gentle giants, allowing visitors to observe their behaviour, interactions, and familial bonds in their natural habitat.

The park’s mist-shrouded forests are also home to golden monkeys, endemic bird species, and a variety of other wildlife, making it a biodiversity hotspot.

Akagera National Park

Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah national park, offering a contrast to the country’s mountainous terrain and providing a habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. Visitors can enjoy classic game drives in Akagera, encountering iconic African species such as lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and giraffes, against the backdrop of rolling plains and shimmering lakes.

Boat safaris on Lake Ihema provide opportunities to observe hippos, crocodiles, water birds, and other aquatic wildlife, adding another dimension to the safari experience.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rain forests, home to a staggering array of flora and fauna, including 13 primate species and over 300 bird species. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe offers a chance to encounter these charismatic primates in their montane forest habitat, alongside other primate species such as colobus monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys.

Canopy walks through the forest canopy provide a unique perspective on Nyungwe’s ecosystem, allowing visitors to observe wildlife from above while enjoying panoramic views of the forest.
